Whitewater Kayaking reading the river

If you’re on whitewater that you haven't been on before or a river that the water level has changed, the line you use to navigate the river can change also. How should you approach the whitewater? The answer is research. Find the line you will take before you attempt to navigate down the rapid.

You can do this by whitewater charts and river maps available from you local kayak stores or on-line whitewater sources but if you’re on the river already stop before the rapid. Walk the part of the river you are going to navigate. Be familiar with the bends and rocks and fast moving water. Pick landmarks that you can see clearly during your navigation.

Once you have researched the river area make a mental plan on how you will proceed using your landmarks. Talk it over with your fellow kayakers and set up safety boats find places that you might have a quick get away point.

If the river is above your skill level then you may have to walk around the rapid. Better safe than sorry! Theres always more river ahead!

When you have formulated your whitewater plan and discussed this with your fellow kayakers its time to deploy your plan. Be calm and relaxed and follow your plan and make adjustments as needed. If you did a thorough research of the whitewater the adjustments needed will be easier since you will know what is ahead.

Whatever your decision is enjoy the river and have fun. It's the reason you are out there to begin with. If you choose to walk around the whitewater so be it. Don't rush yourself experience takes time and research.
